Leading insurance and risk management provider, Lockton Philippines puts a spotlight on environmental risk management in its 1st Legacy Awards, a program which aims to recognize research initiatives from different universities that promote the responsible use of resourcesand environmental responsibility of businesses.

As the impact of ecological threats get clearer, industries and communities are feeling the need to include managing environmental risks as a necessary component in their policies.

Climate change remains the number one environmental peril with effects such as rising sea levels, storms, droughts, floods that have made people more vulnerable to their surroundings. Alongside these are other pressing concerns like air pollution caused by vehicles, water contamination, untreated sewage, and emission of pollutants from metal processing, just to name a few.

Insurance company Lockton Philippines recognizes this need to bring environmental awareness beyond the boardroom and on to a bigger platform. Now celebrating its 25th year, the insurance company launched the 1stLockton Philippines Legacy Awards last April and in commemoration of Earth Day. It’s a first of its kind college-based contest inspired from the action research method wherein the researcher studies and engages with a specific community, gains new knowledge from them, and formulates actions to better solve the latter’s’ situation.

The contest encourages a team of three college students, along with their faculty adviser, to submit an evaluative, analytical, investigative action research that suggests better practices for business to operate. A total of Php1M will be given away to the Grand Prize, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao winning teams. Faculty advisers and the school will also receive cash prizes.

Special prizes will also be awarded for Best Research in Risk Management Efforts for an Indigenous Community and the Environment; and Best Research for Risk Management Efforts on Marine Preservation.

Besides the cash prizes and the prestige that the 1st Lockton Legacy Awards will bring, all research entries will also be given the chance to possibly take part in the contest’s Student-Corporate Partner Program wherein corporations looking for viable corporate social responsibility projects could adopt the research work for funding and execution.

Lockton Philippines President Vic Valledor and Chairman Dr. Elfren Cruz believe that the 1st Lockton Legacy Awards is a way of stepping up the company’s commitment to sustainability through proper management of environmental risks.

“The mounting occurrence of environmental risks has become a real social challenge for the industry,” says Dr. Cruz.“In times of natural disasters, we’re more than just a profit-generating company, we also support the social and economic growth of our partners,” he adds.

“We hope the 1st Lockton Philippines Legacy Awards can serve as a platform for increased long-term sustainability through the engagement of our partner companies looking for CSR programs and the participating young student researchers in the contest,” says Valledor.

Deadline of submitting application forms for the 1st Lockton Philippines Legacy Awards has been extended to August 31. Deadline of submission of the research work is on October 2, 2019.
