DUMAGUETE, Philippines — Post rock band Odd is set to release their new single Farewell on July 26, 2024. The brand new instrumental, their first new release since 2023’s “Where The Sun Is Shining EP”, will be available on your favorite streaming platforms and on Bandcamp. This track captures the essence of personal catharsis.
Guitarist Cole Geconcillo shares that the inspiration for Farewell came from a friend’s challenge to stop dwelling on the past and start thriving in the present. “After that conversation, I spent a couple of hours messing around with my guitar, not knowing that I was already playing what would be the main melodic theme of Farewell,” he explains. The result is a song that celebrates the courage to let go of the past and embrace the now.
The name “Farewell” itself is a nod to those who are brave enough to say goodbye. The main melody of the song, or variants of it, has been a work in progress for years, finally coming together in this release. In their current situation, Odd may often operate slowly and silently, but as Geconcillo reassures their fans, “we’re still here.”
Odd’s music has always been characterized by its instrumental and intentional nature and Farewell fits perfectly into the somber instrumental genre the band has come to be known for. Strongly influenced by artists like Aural Method, This Will Destroy You, and All The Bright Lights, they’ve now crafted a piece that truly connects with listeners even while the band’s members are scattered across the world.
The collaborative effort involved many painstaking steps, with Geconcillo writing the main melodic theme and continuing through the recording phase, which met a few challenges of demoing, coordinating, and recording virtually. Despite the distance, they pulled off a deeply resonating track.
Farewell’s cover art is a photo taken from the 14th floor of Cole’s residential building in his current locale of Toronto. It’s a blurry yet symbolic depiction of his life at the time, filled with uncertainty but also hope.
With its release, Farewell promises to be a moving addition to Odd’s repertoire. Aiming to reach those who feel displaced and afraid is the message Geconcillo and his bandmates want to convey. “Comfort mitigates growth.” The band hopes that listeners will find solace and strength in the track’s haunting melodies and the story it tells.
