All the chessmen are gathered by the coast, seemingly saluting the sun. A checkmate wins the game, and sunsets mark the completion of a cycle and an end to the proceedings of all those who toil. The colorful pawns echoing the vivid sunset sky strangely group nonchalant in the shade. They may be contemplating the conclusion of their labor as daylight slowly fades.

About the Artwork

Sixteen colorfully painted panels each comprise Nasser Zulueta’s Resilient and Bayanihan works. Zulueta chose to highlight these two values, as they are what helped us most throughout the pandemic. As a people, we remain resilient despite subsequent crises, with the bayahinan spirit keeping us afloat. Like the individual pieces that make up the work, it takes individuals to build a solid community to weather any storm.
